15:00 Additive Manufacturing Technologies: Fields of Action
Dr.-Ing. Erik Marquardt, VDI e.V., Düsseldorf, Deutschland
Although everybody is talking about Additive Manufacturing (AM), AM machines are rarely seen at fabrication plants today. This presentation aims to find out the reasons for this. Firstly, the economic purposes of AM, and tasks that AM technologies can solve, are examined. The presentation then moves onto exploring application fields that are currently unsuitable for AM thus resulting in diverse fields of action. These fields of action are not limited to progress in technology. There is a need for research, information and discussion concerning on-the-job safety, training and education, research on the potential applications and the legal framework. Many of these fields of action are systematically studied by honorary members of the VDI Technical Committees.

Dr.-Ing. Erik Marquardt
VDI e.V., Düsseldorf, Deutschland
Dr. Erik Marquardt studied electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen University. He completed his doctorate there in the field of optical measurement system. He worked for 15 years in the industry, mainly with machine vision companies, before he joined the Association of German Engineers (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure, VDI) in 2012. He now works with technical expert committees to develop VDI standards on optical measurement systems and additive manufacturing.
