About us
NOVOTRON – more than 25 years experience in drive technology. A lot of developers’ work had been necessary until servo converters became as small and lightweight as they are today. We contributed substantially to this development, and at the Hanover trade fair in 1992 we came up with a real sensation: the world’s smallest 5 kW servo converter ever so far. Consequently, NOVOTRON’s newest servo converter series NOVODRIVE ND40 are among the smallest and most compact devices available on the market. At the same time, these digital servo converters come with a functional range that leaves nothing to be desired. And that ain’t the whole story – a special PLC add-on allows to upgrade ND40 to become a full-blown drive control, so that a lot of automation tasks can be taken over by the drive unit itself, providing for a perfect interplay of NOVOTRON’s brushless servo motors, high-torque motors and linear motors. Creating perfect solutions for complex automation requirements – that’s NOVOTRON.

NOVOTRON launches servo converter with ENDAT 2.2 support
High-end precision, functional versatility, and extremely compact design is what has characterized the servo converters made by NOVOTRON since the company presented the world’s smallest 5-kw servo converter at the Hanover fair in 1992. This device was the ancestor of the NOVODRIVE ND31 and ND32 series – digital servo converters that leave nothing to be desired!

But the processor architecture of the ND30 series offered no more possibilities for adding new functions. So now the time has arrived to come up with a new series, called ND40! NOVODRIVE ND41 comes with a completely new „interior“. It has on board a modular processor allowing almost any kind of extension, which makes possible better extendability of standard applications as well as better possibilities for customer specific adaptation.

Beyond its „inner values“ NOVODRIVE ND41 offers great additional features, such as ENDAT 2.2. support for absolute-measuring systems. And when the servo converters of the ND40 series are equipped with a complementary software, motors can be operated in the field-weakening mode.

NOVODRIVE ND41 is available for input voltages ranging from 24 to 230 Volt and power levels ranging from 2 to 12 Ampere. NOVODRIVE ND42 and ND43 for higher input voltages and power levels will be available soon
Field-weakening operation: Acceleration for powerful servo motors
Time is money – this is true particularly in manufacture. Therefore machine cycle times should be as short as possible.

However, when dealing with applications requiring high torques yet low speeds, physical limits are quickly reached, as continuously high torque always involves a high voltage constant. The motor’s performance is thereby reduced, and fast processing is made impossible.

NOVOTRON decided to deal with this problem on a physical level. An interesting approach is field-weakening operation. To allow a motion control job to be done quickly or ensure a motor’s quick return to its initial position, the motor’s magnetic field is reduced just for this specific task.

The results are promising: In experiments with a pressing machine the travel speed of conventional servo motors could be increased by one hundred percent when operating the motors in field-weakening mode! In order to control motors during these phases, NOVODRIVE servo converters must only be equipped with a complementary software. You see: Shorter machine cycle times are easily made possible now!
Linear motors: For increased dynamics and precision
Where conventional linear systems reach their limits, 'real’ linear drives can demonstrate their potential: enormous acceleration, highest possible precision, and practically no wear and tear as there are no mechanical connections.

Offering the NSLM linear motors series, NOVOTRON located in Ludwigsburg, Germany, meets the growing demand for this type of motors. NSLM motors achieve nominal forces ranging from 170 N up to 800 N during continuous operation (260 N to 1200 N in the S3 mode). They are available in various widths and in any lengths – optionally as single elements or as complete drives.

NOVOTRON’s range of motors comprises five series of servo motors as well as high-torque and linear motors. And with NOVOTRON’s servo converters, NOVODRIVE ND31 and ND32, perfect partners for all motor types are already at hand.

By means of a bus connection , the converters can be integrated into overall control units. On demand, NOVOTRON’s ND30-SPS PLC add-on takes over central controlling tasks – as it does with this hexapod equipped with linear motors, for which the PLC is responsible for coordinating the highly complex interplay of six axes.
