Comparing virtual current control and PID algorithms for switch mode power supplies using digital signal processors
Roger Lee, Acro Electronics System, China
Lawrence Meares, Intusoft, United States of America

Virtual Current Control for Switch Mode Power Supplies, SMPS, is a new technology that extracts the switched inductor current from a software model running in real time. It offers the advantage of current mode control without the need for current sense components. A side-by-side comparison of the PID control algorithm is made using the same design automation tools and power-switching module. Comparative hardware test results are presented using 2 commercially available DSP’s .

Architecture for In-built Battery Charging and Battery Management for Microcontroller Applications
Nitin Agarwal, IMS, STmicroelectronics, India

Batteries are unpredictable sources of power in nature. To handle the battery pack one should know-

1. How much power one needs to charge

2. Once charged, how long the battery can supply power

In this article, hardware architecture for a microcontroller (MCU) based portable system is proposed, which has the capability to charge its own battery and to replace the external fuel gauge device for monitoring battery status. For MCU based embedded systems, this approach can be used to implement low cost and more reliable systems.

A Low Cost Solution for High Efficiency LLC Converter
Hongying Ding, International Rectifier, United States of America

The increasing popularity of the LLC resonant converter in its half-bridge implementation is due to its high efficiency, low EMI emissions and ability to achieve high power density [1]. This topology is also the most attractive topology for front-end DC bus conversion. It utilizes the magnetizing inductance of the transformer to construct a complex resonant tank with Buck Boost transfer characteristics in the soft-switching region. This paper presents IRS2795, the resonant half-bridge control IC. It has 600V high voltage half-bridge gate driver and high precision oscillator, with programmable dead-time to optimize ZVS operation, and the VS sensing technique using the Rdson of power MOS as current sensor thus achieving lossless over current protection, all integrates in an 8-pin package keeps the minimum part counts in the circuit. A brief introduction of the LLC resonant converter is included. And the schematic and experiment results of a 240W DC/DC converter are also provided.
